So it's another day, I open my email application and see some new spam.

It looks auto-generated to me. I try to recall, what motiviated someone to make this email and send it?
I'm guessing that the sole purpose was to test if an email address was valid. (see "On-Going Dictionary Attack")

Some program is looping though possible email addresses using my email domain.

The oddest feature of this approach, to me, is the use of combinations of text in the email to fool spam filters. (see "Odd Words")

The same program is keeping track of returns, however that looks in email protocol, and at the end of the process, a list of re-sellable email adresses is produced.

Then this list of emails is sold to the other spammers - ads, stock, phishing schemes, etc.

What approaches are in the works for countering spam?
